AUXILIARY VESSELS
Berlin class AOR
_The German Navy EGV, also known as Type 702, is a 20,000-ton class
auxiliary replenishment ship designed to provide logistics and medical
services support to combined task forces. The lead ship, called A 1411
Berlin, was commissioned by the German Navy in 2001 with a second being
commissioned in 2002 and a third expected by 2012. These ships are
equipped with flight deck and hangar for two helicopters. Their
diesel-electric propulsion system allows a top speed of 20 knots. A
single Berlin-class can transport 9,600 cubic meters of fuel, 550 cubic
meters of water, 160 tons of ammunition, 280 tons of food, 100 tons of
dry stores and 32 containers.
Point class RORO
_The Point class is a class of roll-on/roll-off sealift ships
for use as
naval auxiliaries to the armed forces. They were the result of
the Strategic Defence Review and are designed for the strategic
transport of military cargoes and vehicles in times of need.
The selected design is based on standard Ro/Ro 2700-class vehicle carriers. The 10,000-ton ships will have contract crews of 18, a maximum speed of 22 knots, and 2,600-lane-meters of vehicles. It is expected that each ship will be able sustain at least 18 knots. Cargo capacity will include 25 main battle tanks, 24 Armoured Personnel Carriers, and an unspecified number of 155-mm self propelled artillery guns, vehicles and trailers.
