BUNDESWEHR
_The Bundeswehr is the German government's instrument for a comprehensive, proactive security and defense policy, which:
Germany's defense against external threats remains the political and constitutional basis of the Bundeswehr. Given the growing threat to the German territory by terrorist attacks, the protection of the population and infrastructure is of the utmost importance. It places additional demands on the Bundeswehr in the performance of tasks at home and thus, its cooperation with the authorities responsible for internal security agencies of the federal and state governments.
The Bundeswehr's tasks derive in part from the constitutional requirements of the mission and goals of German security and defense policy:
The Bundeswehr is facing a new direction. A commission was set up which has developed the proposals for the future structure. The Inspector General has issued a report and finally, a steering committee for the overall strategy of structural reform and a task force, has brought together the main fields of action for the structural reform of the Bundeswehr. While much progress has been made, the reforms are still ongoing and the Bundeswehr is still being adapted to its new role. The abolishment of conscription, the downsizing of the Bundeswehr and the acquisition of new types of equipment are just some examples of the Bundeswehr transforming from a military purely focused upon the defense of Germany to a more mobile and expeditionary military; a process which is still underway at this moment.
